Team Cleveland Girl Wins 6 Gold Medals

Bianca won five golds in the individual gymnastic events Sunday. On Saturday, she and teammates Emily Fiorilli of Solon, Kayla Kmiecik of Avon and Christina Lenny of Broadview Heights won the gold medal in the gymnastics team competition. The gold for team gymnastics was the first medal won by Team Cleveland since the city began participating in the Games four years ago.
"She competed full blast and she hit everything," said Terry Gray, who has been Bianca's coach since she was 6 and is owner of Flytz USA gym in Cuyahoga Falls.
After the competition, Gray treated Bianca to a big brownie sundae at Outback Steakhouse, one of the teen's favorite restaurants. And he let her take a day off from practice on Tuesday. Bianca, who is home-schooled, will enter the eighth grade this fall. She joined Flytz gym at the age of 6 and now trains about 32 hours a week.
"It's really fun," she said. "And I like competing a lot."
A two-time U.S. National Team member, Bianca is the second-ranked U.S. junior on uneven bars and floor exercise and third on balance beam. She placed sixth at the junior all-around U.S. Championships in Nashville in June.
She has competed around the country as well as in France and Mexico and hopes to earn a spot on the U.S. team competing at the Pan-Am Games in San Salvador in October. Bianca said she hopes to earn a college scholarship through gymnastics. Cherie Flohr said she's very proud of her daughter. Bianca doesn't have the natural body for the sport, Flohr said, but she works hard and has great coaching.
"Some girls are just born to flip," Flohr said. "Bianca was not one of those girls. But she just loves it."
The Children's Games gave Bianca experience for competing away from home, coach Gray said. All athletes at the Games, even those from the Cleveland area, were required to stay in dorms. Team Cleveland stayed at a Case Western Reserve University dormitory.
In all, Team Cleveland won nine gold, three silver and five bronze medals in baseball, basketball, gymnastics, soccer, swimming, tennis and track and field.
Bianca's gymnastics teammates also had success beyond their team medal.
Emily Fiorilli also won a silver in the all-around and bronze in the balance beam; and Christina Lenny won the bronze in floor exercise.
Used to high-pressure competitions, Bianca said she enjoyed the emphasis on fun and cultural exchange at the International Children's Games.
"I did see a lot more smiles and personality at this meet," she said.

· August 2, 2004 - Bianca's results have been updated with scores from the International Children's Games. Bianca was part of the first place team, and she took first place in the all-around and all four events! Here's a note from Bianca's mom, Cherie Flohr:

This meet was SO MUCH FUN FOR BIANCA!  She has been meeting athletes from all over the world these past couple of days and trading USA items with them every chance she gets!  I believe she may come home "shoeless" because she has her eye on a huge flag from someone who wants her sandles! Apparently Bianca had her eye on a pair of clogs that the Dutch team had worn during opening ceremonies.  Well, she didn't really have anything big enough to trade with them to get a pair a clogs - she just brought little pins and stuff.  Well, her coach knew how much she wanted those clogs and traded his own USA Jacket for a pair of clogs for Bianca!  He is so good to her! Bianca has been playing at the athlete village, got to participate in the opening ceremonies (which actually had my eyes tearing), and making friends from all different sports - she has some good friends on the USA men's swim team and the Sweden men's soccer team.  She also got to rotate with the Mexican gymnastics team that she just competed against at the recent Olympiada Elite competition.  Best of all, she realizes how lucky she is to be living and training in the USA.  Some of the other teams do not have the money to purchase the girls any bar grips and some don't even train bars or have spring floors.  As far as the competition went, Bianca hit 7 out of 8 routines.  Her beam routines were beautiful on both days with stuck dismounts and a stuck back handspring full.  And the highlight was her floor routines - tons of personality and smiles!  Her team, Team Cleveland, USA, won the gold medal and she took the all around and all event finals.  It was a wonderful "low pressure" fun meet for her to be in and we are very happy to have been able to watch her having so much fun and meeting so many wonderful athletes from so many different countries.

Bianca also won the all-around competition! She stuck both of her vaults for a 9.65 and had an awesome floor routine for a 9.625! Beam also went well (9.475), and though she had a few problems on bars, she still scored a 9.15. Her teammate Emily Fiorilli was second in the all-around behind Bianca's 37.9.
